The Basics of Football

Football

Football is the sport of team play where each player tries to advance a ball into the end zone of the opposing team. The ball may be thrown, rushed, or kicked by a quarterback. There are several variations of the game, but the goal remains the same.

In modern football, each team has 11 players on the field at all times. Some variations include fewer offensive players. These players are called tight ends, and they serve as both offensive linemen and wide receivers.

An offensive ballcarrier loses the ball if they are tackled in the end zone or forced out of bounds. Tight ends can help protect the quarterback and create space for runners.

When a team receives the ball after a field goal attempt fails, they may try to pass the ball. They have four chances to move the ball 10 yards before the clock stops. If the receiving team fails to do so, they are given a time out.

A team’s offensive playbook can range from dozens to hundreds of plays. A team may have a playbook that is more conservative than others, or have plays that have the potential for a fumble, a turnover, or long gains.

Throughout the history of the NFL, the league has enacted a number of complicated penalties for various types of contact. Examples of penalties include a false start, illegal block in the back, and holding.

The game also incorporates special teams. In the NFL, there are a variety of penalties for contact with the head, the helmet, the back, or the chest of a defensive player.
