The Definition of Sports in Non-Western Cultures

As the world grows increasingly commercialized, nations find it difficult to compete against each other on equal footing. This situation has resulted in an imbalance between the wealth and power of nations and the development of athletic talent. Nations are organized into core blocs that are characterized by economics, politics and culture. Core sports world countries include the United States, Russia, Australia and South Korea.

Sports is a popular means for people to display their emotions. These emotions reflect a player’s self-evaluation of his or her performance and those of spectators. These feelings may come before, during, and after a performance. Some sports have subcultures that help athletes manage their emotions. For instance, athletes may be expected to behave a certain way during the national anthem or during post-game celebrations.

Despite this, there are still a number of cultural differences between different sports. For example, non-Western cultures tend to resist Western sports and pursue their own indigenous recreational pursuits. Examples of this are the martial arts of Asia. The development of sports in non-Western cultures is part of a process of globalization and shifting power balances. Some of these changes may have unintended consequences.

As a result, the definition of a sport may vary from culture to culture. The Council of Europe has recommended a more inclusive definition of a sport that encompasses all forms of physical activity that are performed for fun.
