What Is Football?

Football is a game in which two teams play against each other. Each team has 11 players, and the goal is to advance an ovoid ball into its opponent’s end zone. Each team has 4 downs to gain yardage, but if either team fails to get that far, the game is called a turnover. A football game is played using plays that each team makes up, and a play is a certain sequence of moves that a player must complete in order to advance the ball.

While football teams generally contain 45-50 players, only eleven of them are on the field at once. Football players are divided into three types, with big guys serving as blockers and smaller players catching the ball. Medium-sized players may do both. Whether you’re a diehard fan or an occasional spectator, football is a great sport to watch. And if you’re not into playing, you can always watch a game on TV with friends or on the Internet.

There are no official rules for football, but variations of it have existed throughout history. One of the earliest recorded codes dates from 1580 in Italy, when mob football was played. However, the rowdy nature of football resulted in laws being passed in Europe prohibiting it. England banned football for more than six centuries, but these laws were not enforced, and huge crowds continued to play it in a state of chaos. So, football may be as old as it has been in the United States.
